Would it be better to replace your window and siding all at once? Most contractors would say, ideally, yes. Remember, one mismatched element is all it takes to ruin your exterior’s aesthetic. And, replacing them both will ensure your exterior’s aesthetics remain consistent.

Windows and Siding: Which Should Be Replaced First?

Precise Window Capping for Better Curb Appeal

Replacing the two at the same time allows contractors to cap your windows more precisely. Frequently opening and closing windows can weaken the window frame, creating gaps through which water can enter. To reduce the risk of window leaks, contractors install aluminum and vinyl around the window frame to erect a barrier against moisture.

The problem here is that the window’s capping extends to the siding. Contractors may have to cut into the siding to replace and cap the windows. This may result in rough, jagged edges on the area where the siding and windows meet. The removal of the siding will likely damage the capping as well, forcing your contractor to recap your windows and costing you time and money.

But removing the siding and windows at the same time will allow your contractor to precisely cap your windows. Free of any obstructions, contractors can finish the window and siding installation faster.

Windows and Siding That Last Longer

Precise window capping is important because, as mentioned earlier, it diverts rainwater from the window frame and the interior. With the moisture barrier in place, your new windows and siding can last for a long time.

What if You Can’t Replace Them Both at the Same Time?

However, window and siding replacements are a significant investment. And, not everyone has the funds to replace both at the same time. If you need to prioritize, we recommend replacing your windows first. Ultimately, however, it depends on the state of your exterior. If your siding is in worse shape than your windows, it would make sense to replace it first.

To ensure you’ll get your money’s worth, only hire an experienced contractor. Whether you need windows installed or a commercial roof installation, it’s always better to make sure your contractor has extensive experience.
