How Does Natural Light Benefit You?

Humans have an internal body clock, called the circadian rhythm, which is synced to daylight (or lack thereof) for the wake/sleep cycle. When an external factor disrupts the circadian rhythm, such as international air travel, non-exposure to sunlight or insomnia, it causes mood and sleep disorders.

How Does Natural Light Benefit You?

With this in mind, daylighting is a relatively inexpensive way to improve your health and psychological well-being. And, one way to get it, apart from sunning yourself outside every day, is to replace your windows to maximize the amount of sunlight you get without even leaving your home.

Improves Sleep

As explained above, sunlight signals your body that it’s day, and a few hours later it’s going to be night. Without these signals, the body won’t be able to tell the difference, and you will either have insomnia or sleep excessively. With daylighting, however, you will get your body’s natural quota of sunlight, resulting in much better sleep – and, by extension, more energy during the working hours.

Improves Productivity

Speaking of work, scientific literature all agree that daylighting works wonders when it comes to work. A Cornell University study reported that exposure to daylight improves productivity by 2%. This looks like a small number, but in a commercial setting, that translates to about $100,000 per 100 workers. In addition, daylight reduced drowsiness by about 10% and headaches and eyestrain by up to 84% – and all just by replacing windows with clear glass!

Improves Health

The body also produces vitamin D when the skin is directly exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium into bones, which makes teeth and bones stronger and more resistant to injury. Vitamin D also regulates the production of mood hormones, which can help ease the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
