Tips to Properly Clean and Maintain a Steel Entry Door

Your steel entry door plays a vital role in both your home’s aesthetics and functionality. In addition to being one of the first things that greet you and your guests, it also acts as the primary line of defense against various elements. However, because of its prolonged exposure to weather, dirty hands and accidental spills, a dirty steel door can look worn down and unsightly. So, it’s important to keep it clean.

Use Soap and Water
Cleaning steel entry doors is simple and straightforward. No need for commercial cleaners – all you need is a soapy water solution. Use a soft brush with a handle to scrub the door surface with the solution, and then rinse with water from your garden hose. Make sure to use plant-friendly dish soap to avoid damage to your landscaping.
Don’t Use a Pressure Washer
A pressure washer can remove dirt and grime from impossible-to-clean surfaces. However, the pressurized stream of water coming out of it can cause damage to most types of finishes. This is why door installers don’t recommend using the equipment, even at the lowest settings. For removing stubborn stains on the steel door surface, mix equal parts water and vinegar. Apply the solution on the stain, let sit for a few minutes, and scrub gently with a soft cloth or sponge.
Inspect the Door Surface for Damaged Finish
During manufacturing, steel doors are coated with finishes to protect the material from corrosion. Sometimes, outdoor conditions can damage them. Rust may accumulate as soon as moisture and oxygen seep into chipped or dinged coatings. Make sure to inspect your door for signs, such as cracks, blisters and scratches, whenever you clean it. Call your door contractor if you are not sure if it needs repairs.
